Citizen Journalism – Travis Smith – Hop studios
My notes from Northern Voice – unedited from earlier today as my computer felt it necessary to incessantly drain my laptop battery while online at the conference. I typed in text-edit happily.
Editor – term came into existence in 1712
What do editors do – they tell people stories…
Journalism – is the process of reporting the news.
New – core of journalism – what has changed? i.e. man bites dog.
A fact that changed – once you hear news it becomes old…. i.e. That’s news to me. – old – it has to be news!! new!
report the news.
Reporting – several step process
- gather information – find info, facts
- filter what you gathered – what has changed what hasn’t changed – collating and putting it together in different ways.
- publish – ad an opinion – could be plagarist!
- transcribing is not repeorting
- must express facts and perhaps give your opinion
- can update and expand
GET out of your house! Look at what is happening in the world – takes notes – take photos
Gather your info from the government
Access to information Act! Canadian public access to any record the government has.
Ask the government what you want and they have to respond.
Ask people for an interview – see what is in their head
-write down the answers – smart thing to do.
Carry your tools with you!
cell phone – notepad
get as close as you can to what news you want to record (audio, video) – most ipods out there except for the ipod shuffle can record video.
Rules to photography –
1. take your camera with you
2. take the picture.
