While the sun was setting over the city, it’s beams shone through the cloud cover lighting the backyard tress on fire. With camera in hand taking pictures of the many glistening trees facing West I was mesmerized by the red’s, oranges and yellows on this grey winter’s day. It turned the sky an awesome deep hued ultramarine blue.

The ice storm from last week covered all surfaces and most of it has not melted for it remains well below zero degrees Celsius even during the somewhat warmer daytime hours. I’ve not seen ice last this long on trees before and cars for that matter for as long as I can remember. Perhaps an ice age is approaching…

Needless to say I ventured out shopping (one of my least favorite things to do) and purchased two new sweaters to keep myself warm in these frigid temperatures.

Hi!
I’ve admired your art for some time now. Then saw your blog update for today and thought wow…how many times have you seen an amazing sunrise/sunset and not had your camera! I’m thrilled for you to have caught one! I haven’t seen ice like that since I was a little kid living in Minnesota. I was about 8, found myself in the middle of a willow tree that was totally coated in ice. Probably not the safest place to be, looking back, but I still can hear the branches creaking and the ice sparkling. Amazing, thanks for bringing back such a neat memory.

Hi Kimberly – You must live in a warmer climate now. What a beautiful memory to have from being a child. Thanks for sharing it with me.

I hope winter lets go of it’s grip here soon. We have not seen temperatures above zero for close to a month. Normally, we experience a January thaw lasting a few days where the temperatures do zize slightly above zero and that didn’t happen this year… thus the ice. Maybe it will arrive in February ;)

great shot, reminds me of a project I started based on the shadows cast by tree branches. I’ll have to dig that one out and finish it.

If you dig it out let me know Ryan. I’d love to see it!
