Custom Matting Illustration with Creative Process or How to Draw a Custom Mat

04-final-illustrative-matting

A few months ago I was contacted by a wonderful customer of mine whom asked if I would create a custom mat for her sisters wedding invitation. She gave me full creative liberties which is what I look for in a client these days.

I asked her for a few colours and a few images of what the wedding theme was and then went to town so to speak. The creative process follows with the final illustration above. You can click it to see more detail. Below is the beginning ink drawing rendered using Faber Castell Pitt Artist Pens. I rarely if ever use pencil first and drawing directly with ink on paper.

Adding in more colour detail using Prismacolor Verithin coloured pencils and placed a deep cream sheet of paper behind mat to represent invitation colour. I purchased the pre-cut archival while mat from Michaels Crafts.

The final size of the mat will fit a 5×7 inch invitation and fit into an 8×10 inch picture frame. I first met Elizabeth here in Saint John, NB last Summer while she was on a cruise vacation with her husband from Massachusetts, USA.

An FYI a RIP and a DIY – it’s the end of the miniature greeting card sets

fish miniature greeting cards set handmade

I began designing and creating these sets of cards in late 2008 and shortly after listing them for sale in the Art Shop. They were an instant success, with people buying them who spanned the globe living on five continents.

FYI – About a month ago, I was diagnosed with mild to moderate tendonitis in my left wrist and hand. And while, yes, I am right handed, I use the left hand simultaneously and just as much as the right hand when doing studio work, artwork, assembling, packaging, cutting, gardening, cleaning, dishes and typing and want to keep the left wrist from becoming too damaged to use at all. Preventative medicine?

RIP – I have about 14 packages of cards left in six different sets. Once they sell out, I will not, in the foreseeable near future be creating more.

DIY – However, I will be releasing and selling the awesome digital file that is associated with each set of cards; 10 patterns wrapped into one download in total. That means, you’ll get the high resolution print files with illustrations included, instructions for creating and packaging them and the supply list too. Expect this pattern to be released later this summer.

Wonderful Wine – remember that label I designed for Red Gate Run?

red gate run - custom wine bottle floral illustrations for red wine by illustrator jessica doyle

After a painfully long wait I’m finally able to see with my own two eyes what the wine label that I illustrated back in April of this year for Red Gate Run looks like printed and adhered to the wine bottles.

Christopher Plante, the Californian wine producer, bottled the wine this summer. But, due to strict export/import international duties on all alcoholic beverages that are traveling from the United States and into Canada we had to figure out another way for me to get these filled bottles of wine! A good friend, Cara was traveling to the State of Maine this month. She picked the wine up for me at her PO Box so that I wouldn’t have to pay the exorbitant duty, the small shipment would have accrued while be shipped across the border into the province of New Brunswick.
