Seasonal Kaleidoscopes or Why I Like Winter

Thumbnail image for Seasonal Kaleidoscopes or Why I Like Winter

Each Winter I seem to migrate no hibernate into my dreams, put paint brush to hand and begin painting floral and embellished little artworks. Stroke after stroke I load the paintbrush and simply paint. I think it dawned on me that much of my recent angst was due to not letting my mind flow freely [...]

The painting of the boxes and coming soon – the trunk!

Thumbnail image for The painting of the boxes and coming soon – the trunk!

I seem to float between drawing on paper and the need to paint three dimensional objects that are useful. Each little wooden box starts out naked… then I clothe it in Gesso and let it dry and harden overnight and upon waking, sand it smooth before decorating it’s skin.

When my mind is restless and full, [...]

Hand painting Christmas balls or is it really about sex?

Thumbnail image for Hand painting Christmas balls or is it really about sex?

Each year, well almost every year I sit down and paint Christmas balls for gift giving as I finally did finish setting up that area in the living room to paint at earlier this week. I needed an area that could remain creatively messy. Thus far I’ve painted four Christmas balls and sadly have run [...]

ABC Alphabet Poster

Thumbnail image for ABC Alphabet Poster

Back in 1993 I drew this whimsical alphabet poster on bristol board. Sadly, I didn’t know about using archival inks or paper for that matter back then. And had a tendency to illustrate right to the edge of the paper I was drawing upon. The black ink I had drawn around each letter had faded [...]

Absinthe 99 or playing with the green fairy that was 2004

Thumbnail image for Absinthe 99 or playing with the green fairy that was 2004

In 2004 during an intensive year of college in British Columbia we were asked to illustrate a poster in an older illustrative style with hand drawn letters. Absinthe 99 is the result of that assignment.
That year of college was one of the most brutal and rewarding times of my life. I had applied and was [...]

Star of the East – custom design work

In September, Esther and Estalla from Turkey of Star of the East contacted me about doing a business card for them featuring the Sassy Sea Urchin illustration of mine.

And I agreed. Their jewelry is whimsically detailed and my illustrations seemed to jive well with their beautiful style.

I began working on the design initially using the [...]
