I finished painting those Christmas balls!

I finally finished painting those balls I began earlier. Five are going as Christmas gifts to friends and family. I am keeping one for myself and I’m also doing a trade with the uber talented Shayla Maddox for one of her hand painted balls.

And I’m aware that the sound is not the greatest in this video. Blame it on the giant pimple! 😉

Merry Christmas Everyone!

Hope you’ll all enter the end of year art giveaway worth $165 of handmade by me goods!

Hand painting Christmas balls or is it really about sex?

Each year, well almost every year I sit down and paint Christmas balls for gift giving as I finally did finish setting up that area in the living room to paint at earlier this week. I needed an area that could remain creatively messy. Thus far I’ve painted four Christmas balls and sadly have run out of Varathane to top coat them with. I’ll need to make a run to the hardware store this weekend. Yes, I use hardwood floor varnish on any piece that I paint with acrylic.

I think painting is like riding a bike. You really don’t forget how to do it but it does take about four balls to get back into the groove of making those itsy bitsy paint strokes. I use Kroma Artist Quality Acrylic made on Granville Island in Vancouver and you can only buy it there to. It’s a wonderful milky acrylic and heavily pigmented for a brilliant colour and a smooth finish.

These are some finished balls I’ve painted from years gone by that I’ve kept for myself. I think I’ve painted close to 150 different balls that family and friends now have and decorate their trees with.

And this just made me laugh to much not to post this here on the blog!

If you’d like to add me as a friend on facebook. Feel free to do so! It gets quite lively over there at times! Haha!

Handpainted boxes and getting messy

Something happened over the last month and my handpainted boxes began selling on Etsy. This makes me smile as I love painting little boxes to hold your precious items in.

I’m setting up a painting station in the living room directly between the sunroom to the right and studio on the left just beside the bookshelf. I need an area that can get messy with needing to be cleaned up.

living-room

Although, I have a large studio every inch of it is used for something other than messy creative work. I have the computer desk for the 27″ iMac; the printing table with two printers, the drafting table which is used as my cutting and packaging area, all of which can not have water, paint or bits of paper, sandpaper, wood, dust or paintbrushes hanging around on their surfaces.

So, I’m expanding into the living room today and I’ll be painting directly underneath an illustration I created years ago entitled:

The Old Men in the Tree
who’ll grant you a wish…

three…

Each box set is listed in the Handpainted boxes and objects section of my art shop.

Two new sets of miniature greeting cards

Each set is listed in the shop within the paper goods section. Do remember that holiday shipping deadlines are fast approaching especially for international orders that are traveling outside of Canada (which is where I live). I will be posting these deadlines soon. Order early if you want your order to arrive in time for the holidays. Thank you!

And it’s an Art Box – a Homeless One at That

Update – This box has since sold! Thank you! Other one of a kind boxes are available in this section of my shop.

The nameless ones

I painted this box to go with a series of three paintings, I finished in late 2008, entitled The Nameless Ones.

This Nameless One’s box has to be my most viewed and most favorited listing on Etsy. It’s been viewed close to 4000 times. And I do wonder why it hasn’t sold yet. I even did a kick-ass job with the photography as it’s graced the front page of Etsy numerous times which could indeed account for some of it’s high view numbers.

The nameless ones

It is hand painted by me, with India ink and the finest artist quality acrylic. This box has been gessoed, sanded and varnished three times for durability.

Box Dimensions – 2 11/16 by 2 5/8 inches or 68mm by 66mm

The nameless ones

If you buy this box and mention this blog post in the message to seller upon checkout I will ship one, 5×5 inch print, from the Nameless One’s series, of your choice, with it. Happy Friday!

I created a makeshift work table to photograph from using the wall, portfolios, cardboard and a large pad of cartridge paper which you can see in this post (last photo). Two nights ago I purchased two navy blue folding metal saw horses. I will be buying plywood and having it cut to size with the help of Dad to create a proper work table to stand at this weekend!

The first two sets can be seen here.
